We describe a method for calculating directly the mean integrated
intensity in an inhomogeneous Rayleigh scattering atmosphere using a
combined variational and iterative technique. This method is
particularly useful for computing dissociation rates in aeronomical
problems. Simple semi-analytic expressions are derived.
