Observed characteristics of the interactions of the magnetospheres on the planetary atmospheres of Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus and Saturn are summarized. Tables containing the estimated order of magnitude of power associated with auroral particle precipitation and Joule heating and of ionospheric ion outward fluxes arrived at are given. Measurements from Viking, Phobos and Voyager missions are used. The auroral emission intensity of Earth is second only to that of Jupiter which is extreme in most respects. For planets with a corotating plasmasphere extending to the magnetopause, the Joule heating power is small compared with the precipitating particle power.
