The factors affecting the determination of plasma bulk parameters in space are examined with emphasis on density determination. With reference to a particular ion plasma instrument, AMPTE-UKS, it is shown that the most significant problem associated with measuring ion density in a space environment is the efficiency of the microchannel plate, i.e., the fraction of particles striking the MCP which produce a recorded pulse. A computer simulation is used to look for systematic errors and to verify the method of extraction of plasma parameters. The detector resolution is shown to be adequate for determining density for both solar wind (less than 5 pct error) and magnetosheath conditions (less than 6 pct error).
