Assuming that the distribution law is valid under the P-T-X conditions concerned, a general outline is given of the distribution of trace elements between several phases formed in a crystallizing magma. The variation in the distribution coefficients with temperature and chemical composition is discussed. It is shown that extreme care must be taken when distribution coefficients are determined by a study of naturally occurring rocks and that a determination may, in many cases, be impossible.
