ALTHOUGH the diffuse interstellar band at 4430 Å and its twenty or
so companions have been known for many years, these bands are still
unidentified. The 4430 Å band, in particular, has been the subject
of much speculation1-6. So far there have been few attempts
to reproduce these bands in the laboratory.
