The scientific interests of William A. Fowler cover an unusually wide
range. The symposium held at the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy,
Cambridge, on July 19 to 21, 1971, in honour of his sixtieth birthday
was designed to explore some of the topics with which he has been
concerned and the relasionships among them.
