Microorganisms isolated from springs of Western Canada exhibit wide variations in their ability to fractionate sulfur and carbon isotopes in vitro . During reduction of oxidized species of sulfur, some experiments gave almost negligible isotope effects, while in others, the S 32 -containing species was reduced up to 4 per cent faster than the heavier S 34 -containing species. One Clostridium species exhibited an inverse sulfur isotope effect during sulfite reduction. Carbon dioxide produced from metabolism of lactate was depleted in C 13 by as much as 26 compared to the initial lactate. The reduction of sulfate to sulfide by two organisms functioning symbiotically is prevalent in many springs where the sulfur isotope fractionation is large.
