The DYANA campaign (DYnamics Adapted Network for the Atmosphere) was performed from January through to March 1990 in the northern hemisphere. A large number of ground-based balloon and rocket borne experiments were performed to study various aspects of middle atmosphere dynamics (10-100 km). DYANA was a project of the Solar Terrestrial Energy Progarm (STEP). This paper briefly reviews the scientific objectives of the campaign, the campaign structure and the geophysical conditions present during the campaign. Detailed results of DYANA are presented in the subsequent 24 papers of this issue.
