We demonstrate that principal component analysis of 12CO J=1-0 emission can be used to estimate distances to molecular clouds. The method rests on the assumption of a universal relationship between velocity dispersion and spatial scale within the clouds. Our data do not in fact support an exact universal relationship, but the influence of intercloud variability results in a ~30% uncertainty in derived distances only. We establish a calibration of the method for giant molecular clouds associated with H II regions of known distance.
