A possible explanation in terms of the large-scale structure of the universe is proposed for the large-scale irregularities discovered in the microwave background in excess of those which may be due to solar proper motion. Consideration is given to the perturbations of the microwave background induced by large-scale gradients in the gravitational potential in clusters of galaxies, which are in turn caused by the irregular mass distribution. It is shown that if the mass autocorrelation function is negligibly small on large scales, the brightness fluctuations vary in accordance with recent observations if the mass autocorrelation function at distances less than 30/h Mpc agrees with the observed galaxy two-point correlation function.
