The Mead-Fairfield magnetospheric field model (1975) is used to study the adiabatic motion of charged particles in the magnetosphere. Emphasis is placed on characteristic features of motion due to nondipolar distortions in field geometry. The tilt averaged picture of the field configuration is examined; and a theoretical evaluation is given of parameters such as bounce period, longitudinal invariant, and bounce averaged drift velocities of charged particles in the Mead-Fairfield geometry. These parameters are evaluated as a function of pitch angle and azimuthal position in the ring current region (50 to 7 earth radii from the center of the earth) for four ranges of magnetic activity.
