Balmer line profiles and photometry of the 21 DA white dwarfs given in Wegner and Schulz (1980) are evaluated using model atmosphere methods. It is shown how DA stars can be successfully analyzed from spectroscopic data alone if line profiles up to H are utilized. The spectroscopic method confirms a mean gravity of log g=8.
Though the selection of the sample is biased towards objects with suspected peculiarities most stars turn out to be close to the average DA sequence. One star (Wg42) has a rather large mass (1 Msun) when interpreted with hydrogen rich model atmospheres. Abundance effects that could alter this conclusion are discussed but appear unlikely. The cool white dwarf EG 11 seems to be the most significant case of a rather low mass degenerate and poses problems for current theories of stellar evolution. The line profiles of Wg33 are inconsistent with its colors. This star may be a composite white dwarf. The effects of self broadening and van der Waals interaction on the line profiles are estimated and are shown to be unimportant for Teff ≳ 8000K and NHe/NH ≲ 1.
