The population of vibrational levels in PAH emitters is examined using a simple optical pumping model. It is shown that significant pumping effects occur for vibrational states with energies ≤ 200 cm-1. The long radiative lifetime of these states implies that they may exhibit enhanced or inverted population relative to lower levels. The apparent absence of strong discrete PAH emission at λ > 15 μm suggests the existence of a hitherto unrecognized quenching mechanism and may provide useful insight into the physical state of these emitters.
