UK-South is a British multiuser program for the EISCAT radar that is designed to study the ionosphere south of the radar, particularly electron density troughs, plasmasphere, plasmapause, and midlatitude ionosphere. Experimental runs during summer, autumn, and winter have been assessed to evaluate the scientific usefulness of the present program under a number of conditions. It is shown that the beam-swinging technique gives consistent results when convection flows are steady, more consistent than the alternative tristatic velocity determinations even relatively near the radar. Beam-swinging results are more difficult to interpret in dynamic situations, but still provide valuable information on the processes involved.
