Venus Ionosphere: Models, Venus Ionosphere: Solar Activity Cycles
Scientific paper
A two-dimensional model of the formation of the nightside ionosphere, in which the action of two likely sources of its formation - ionization by epithermal electrons and horizontal ion transport from the day side - are taken into account, is tested in application to low solar activity on the basis of radio occultations of the Venera-9, -10, -15, and -16 satellites. A comparison of experimental and calculated data favors the first of these sources, whereas the second source along with photoionization make a contribution only in the vicinity of the planet's terminator and account for the regular decrease in electron density at the maximum of the main layer of the ionosphere as the solar zenith angle increases from 90° to 110°.
