The X-ray Polarimeter on the GEMS mission uses a Time Projection Chamber proportional counter to measure the polarization of astrophysical X-rays by sensing the track of the photoelectrons excited by the incident X-rays. Science data processing hardware (FPGAs) onboard the spacecraft will implement dedicated algorithms to filter the detector data based on the track energies, durations, and spatial characteristics in order to reduce background. We present a description of the algorithms employed for the onboard science data processing, of the expected sources of particle and gamma-ray detector backgrounds, and the techniques used to mitigate them.
