The Sun-Sunspots-Magnetic Fields

Scientific paper

In order to construct three-dimensional sunspot magnetic field models we must ascertain the azimuth of the field χ and its possible variation with depth. Here we propose a method of finding the variation of χ with depth. For a fixed point in the sunspot we measure the two Stokes parameters Q and U at different parts of a magneto-sensitive line. We can then draw the azimuth diagram first suggested by Makita and refined by us. If the locus in this diagram contains loops, then we can conclude that χ varies systematically with depth, otherwise the locus will have a simple shape like a parabola.
This method can be used to the weaker fields outside sunspots, provided the detector is sufficiently sensitive.
