During 2009 and 2010, the kilometer scale interferometers LIGO and Virgo simultaneously observed the sky for transient gravitational wave signals. Nearly real time software analyzed data from this global network to estimate the source positions of gravitational wave triggers with only a few minutes of latency. Triggers with estimated sky positions were delivered to a collection of optical, X-ray, and radio instruments, in the hope of discovering an associated electromagnetic counterpart. The 2009/2010 low-latency search will be discussed, along with some implications for future multimessenger searches with next generation gravitational wave detectors.
