We discuss the prospects for probing the ancient universe through high-energy gamma-ray from GRBs. UV intergalactic radiation fields (IRFs) during cosmic reionization can be probed through multi-GeV spectral absorption features due to photon-photon pair production. Using different IRF models including Pop III stars and consistent with existing observations, we show that spectral cutoffs are expected in the range of 10-100 GeV at z>6. This may be observable by Fermi or future arrays such as CTA, AGIS or 5at5, providing unique and critical information on the evolving IRF, the integrated cosmic star formation rate, and possibly also the escape fraction of UV photons from galaxies.
