We present preliminary results of the analysis of the oxygen absorption structure in the interstellar medium (ISM) using high-resolution X-ray spectra from several sources. They were obtained with the Medium Energy Gratings (MEG) of the High Energy Transmission Grating
Spectrometer (HETGS) on board of the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. In particular, we have analyzed the 21-25 A wavelength region where the oxygen K edge and the Kα resonance absorption features are observed. We use simple models based on the most recent and accurate atomic photoabsorption cross sections to fit the observations, and thus, derive physical properties of the ISM. We also explore the possibility that the absorption is due to other species apart from atomic oxygen (e.g. molecules or solids) and discuss the implications.
