I will present observations of the exceptional multiwavelength transient Sw 1644+57, detected by Swift on 28 March 2011. Our observations pinpoint the transient to the core of a compact galaxy at z 0.35, and imply a peak luminosity of >3x1048 ergs/s, with a total energy of 1054 ergs in the 2 months since its discovery. This is orders of magnitude more luminous than most quasars and blazars. The location of the transient in the core of its host, coupled with its longevity suggest it originates from a new, rare mechanism associated with the central massive black hole. I will discuss our observations, and the implications they have for the nature of Sw1644+57, paying particular attention to the possibility that it represents the tidal disruption of a star by the massive black hole.
