Following strong early evidence that Swift J164449.3+573451 was not a GRB, but instead the disruption of a star by a super-massive black hole, we triggered a series of moderately deep observations with XMM-Newton. The sensitivity achieved in the EPIC/pn spectra and light curves, and RGS spectra, is sufficient to place strong limits on the presence of AGN-like features and variability phenomena. This presentation will summarize some preliminary results in the context of accretion onto stellar-mass and super-massive black holes, disk-jet connections, the unified model for AGN, and prevalent models for tidal disruption events.
