This first part of the presentation serves to illustrate some of the design considerations and history behind H.E.S.S., to discuss the performance
achieved with the H.E.S.S. instrument, and in particular to present the latest state of the H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey in which over 50 sources of VHE gamma rays were discovered, the majority of which now appears to be correlated with pulsar wind nebulae, but also including supernova remnants, binaries, and stellar clusters.
