Selecting intervals for which the interplanetary magnetic field was directed southward and was steady, and the NASA/Polar spacecraft was passing through the magnetic cusp, approximately 130 events are catalogued. For each event, plasma distributions from the Polar/TIMAS instrument are used to determine a time series of cutoff velocities. A time-of-flight formula is used with the plasma cutoff velocities to determine distances of the spacecraft from the site of reconnection. A Tsyganenko magnetic field model is then used to map the path lengths to the expected reconnection sites at the dayside magnetopause. The distances from the mapped reconnection locations to the various analytic/phenomenological model reconnection locations is determined. Statistical analyses are performed to ascertain which model best describes the location of magnetopause reconnection as derived from the observations.
