A model for calculating the scattering properties of irregular, randomly oriented particles is presented. By applying the concept of partial coherence to the individual spherical harmonics in the Mie scattering calculations for spherical particles, analytical expressions are found which quantitatively retrieve many properties of the scattering by irregular particles. Simple physical interpretation is given for the departure from the Mie scattering of the phase function, polarization, and scattering cross section in the scattering by irregular particles. Numerous astrophysical and geophysical applications are possibly relevent to this model.
