Results are reported from calculations of the hydrogen ionization fraction, non-LTE populations and corresponding line intensities in a large range of temperatures, densities, and external radiation fields, with emphasis on the conditions occurring in circumstellar shells. These calculations provide an extensive coverage of physical conditions for which no appropriate results are available in the current literature, and can be used as a guide for the detailed understanding of the formation of the hydrogen spectrum in cool partially ionized plasmas.
