A new and rather compact code, LINESPEC, is developed to calculate the absorption line spectra formed due to passage of continuous radiation (from a quasar) through a layer of a hot (T greater than 10,000 K) and rarefied (N much less than 10 to the 14th/cu cm) plasma in the state of steady kinetic (collisional + photo) ionization equilibrium. Illustrative calculations show that the spectra are very sensitive to T and to the ratio of number densities of ionizing photons and particles.
