Polarization observations of a sample of 39 stars distributed uniformly in an annulus 5 to 6 arcmin from the center of the peculiar galactic globular cluster M 22. Twenty three stars show polarization above the 3-sigma level, and they are concentrated preferentially at the southeast of the cluster center. Some possible explanations for this polarization are discussed, apparently excluding the possibility of an intracluster cloud or stellar origin. The most likely explanation is that the cluster lies partially beyond an interstellar galactic cloud. From the amount of polarization, an average differential reddening of about E(B-V) greater than 0.03 is inferred, the SE portion being more obscured than the rest of the cluster. The metal abundances previously derived by high dispersion spectroscopic techniques could have been affected by such a reddening distribution.
