Many recent discoveries relating to the behavior of the middle and low ionosphere/thermosphere (IT) system have relied upon one or more particular imaging techniques in combination with other data sources and modeling to answer scientific questions. The deployment of space-based instruments sensitive to far-ultraviolet and infrared emissions of the IT system has led to several important breakthroughts in understanding, while ground-based systems have become more numerous and optically capable. GPS receivers distributed globally or in dense regional networks have also provided detailed views of a variety of ionospheric phenomena. These networks of imagers have been used in a number of coordinated studies to understand the new phenomena that they've revealed. A number of these phenomena, occurring under both ordinary and extreme geomagnetic conditions, remain in large part unexplained. Continued progress requires new research and capabilites in key areas, to be discussed.
