The properties of intermediate redshift quasars were studied. The observations allow measurements to be made of both the UV continuum and a number of lines, and provide the basis for investigating relations between the ionizing continuum and the emission line characteristics. The main results are reported. Power law fits to the continuum data yield a mean spectral index (a) of -1.0. This is steeper than the optical slope and less steep than the UV to X-ray slope, and for two thirds of the sample, the UV continuum, when extrapolated to the X-ray region, allows at least 2 sigma above the measured X-ray flux at 2 keV. It is implied that the equivalent widths of these lines anticorrelate with the luminosity at 1450 A, and it is suggested that the covering factor is weakly dependent on luminosity. The dependence of these line ratios on the ionization parameter, U, is known from model calculations. This value of the covering factor together with its inferred luminosity dependence suggests a covering factor of about 0.4 for Seyferts and about 0.1 for high redshift quasars.
