In August 2007, Google launched Sky in Google Earth, the first application to provide a seamless view of the night sky using images captured by astronomers over the past three decades. From exploring the distribution of stars in the Milky Way to viewing the formation of the first galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, from the views of galaxies in the ultraviolet and infrared to the universe as it was 380,000 years after the big bang, Sky provides users with a framework which they can use to communicate and share ideas about astronomy. Like Google Earth, Sky is a dynamic environment, combining new imagery and features developed in partnership with professional and amateur astronomers alongside content generated entirely by outside users.
With the international year of astronomy our interactive presentation will focus on using Google Earth and Sky to introduce Astronomy for Classrooms, Afterschool Programs, and Families. Our Sky workshop will feature presentations by Google engineers and astronomers showcasing the features and capabilities of Google Sky (both the client and browse version), the latest educational tools and resources that are available as well as guiding users through how to author, publish and share classroom and afterschool activities. Presentations will be tailored as tutorials for the features in Sky that can be followed in real time or on-line.
Presenters:
Ryan Scranton (technical lead of Google Sky): Introducing Google Sky and Sky through the browser
Tina Ornduff (lead of Google Earth education): New tools and resources for educators using Google Earth and Sky
Mano Marks (KML developer and educator): How to create classroom and afterschool activities with Sky
