The preliminary results of observations of comet P/Crommelin in the near-infrared (1-3 micron) range are reported. The comet was observed on March 19, 1984 with the ESO 1-m telescope. The diaphragm was 30 arcsec with a throw of 60 arcsec in the east-west direction. Calibration was achieved with the standard star HR 1136 (J = 1.98; H = 1.44). The air mass ranged between 1.6 and 1.9 for both the comet and the star. Results for P/Crommelin were: J = 11.4; K = 11.0; H = 11.0 with an uncertainty of about 0.1 for each filter. The (J-H) and (H-K) diagrams of the comet are presented in a table as functions of the scattering angle. It is found that theoretical models of icy grains inside comets are incompatible with the observational results presented here. The conclusion is made that the measurements tend to support a silicate composition of micron-sized particles from both the J-H and H-K colors.
