The absence of optically polarized radiation from certain cataclysmic
variables has been interpreted, by a number of authors, to imply that
the white dwarfs' magnetic field is weaker (less than about 10 to the
7th G) than in the AM Her binaries. Here, it is shown that this
interpretation is, in general, incorrect.
