The study of Li abundance as an indicator of cosmological processes is surveyed. The evidence used in determining the Li abundance in the sun and solar system (analysis of meteorites, planetary-atmosphere observations, and spectroscopy of the solar photosphere) is reviewed; the mechanism of Li destruction in the deeper layers of the sun is explained; and the formation of Li in heavy-nucleus collisions and in the Big Bang is considered. The latter mechanism is supported by observations obtained using the 3.6-m Canadian-French-Hawaiian telescope, which show a constant Li abundance in metal-poor stars of the Galactic halo; the observed abundance corresponds to a baryon density consistent with an open universe. It is pointed out that the two Li-formation mechanisms so far investigated cannot together account for the abundance seen in younger stars, so that additional processes such as nova or red-giant Li production must be studied.
