Field magnetic data collected from 146 MAGSAT and Triad satellite orbits over polar regions are used to investigate the stable, well-defined patterns of transverse magnetic disturbances occurring during periods of strongly positive Birkeland currents. Several characteristics of the polar disturbances are described, in a series of magnetometric diagrams, and the statistical relationships between spatial patterns and intensities of both the disturbances and Birkeland currents are discussed. It is found that the current system becomes more stable and intensifies as the Birkeland currents become more northward. The new stable polar cap current system is important because of its relationship to a variety of other northward Birkeland current phenomena such as polar cap auroral arcs and multicell convective flow patterns.
