The trajectories of test particles in a simplified numerical model of a supercritical oblique collisionless shock are used to investigate the interaction of solar wind thermal ions with the earth bow shock. The shock is modeled as a finite planar discontinuity of the electrostatic potential and the magnetic field. Potential jump at the shock and at the downstream magnetic field are calculated using the Rankine-Hugoniot conservation relations. The effect of shock geometry on both the particle trajectories and distributions functions are studied. It is found that the shock can produce backstreaming ions by reflecting a small fraction of the incident distribution. The reflected particle trajectories are divided into three types: singularly reflected; multiple traversal; and multiple bounce. The behavior of these different types of backstreaming following their encounter with the shock surface of greater than 30 KeV is examined in detail.
