The paper provides an introduction to the ITU-R Recommendation documents that are of greatest importance for the protection of radio astronomy from interference. Ten Recommendations in the Radio Astronomy series are presented and their principal conclusions are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to the derivation of the threshold values of interference detrimental to radio astronomy. Six other Recommendations also included are concerned with generalized antenna patterns for interference calculations and limits on spurious and out-of-band emissions from active services.
