We present preliminary results of the first spectroscopic study of individual pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The observations, at intermediate spectral resolution, cover young stellar objects in NGC1850 and R136 (30 Dor) and were obtained at optical and near-infrared wavelengths with GIRAFFE and SINFONI on the VLT, respectively. This is the first time such a spectroscopic study of PMS stars is carried out outside the Milky Way to obtain a direct and accurate measurement of their accretion luminosity. Recent determinations by our group of the accretion luminosity and mass accretion rates of over one thousand PMS stars in the Magellanic Clouds, based on narrow-band Hα photometry, suggest considerably higher values than those measured in the Galaxy for objects older than a few Myr.
