The auroral ionosphere as a source of particles for the magnetosphere and auroral particle acceleration and precipitation is discussed. Processes involved in the transport of particles from the ionosphere into the magnetosphere are treated as well as the precipitation of magnetospheric particles into the auroral and subauroral ionosphere. Effects of auroral ionospheric ions on the magnetospheric plasma composition are described. Results obtained before the International Magnetospheric Study are reviewed.
