Terrestrial continuum radiation was studied using simultaneous, high frequency resolution observations onboard the GEOS and ISEE satellites. Triangulation of the sources shows plasmapause sources for escaping continuum on the night and early morning side. The fine structure of the radiation shows very narrow band lines implying very small source regions (radial extent = 10 km). Cut-off and spin modulation measurements reveal a significant X-mode component. When the satellite enters possible source regions, electrostatic noise is observed simultaneously close to the upper hybrid frequency and below the lower hybrid frequency. Observed orders of magnitude require a very high efficiency for linear coupling with electrostatic waves or nonlinear coalescence between upper and lower hybrid waves. Generation of electromagnetic waves through modulational instability and cavitational collapse of upper hybrid waves is discussed.
