Observations of optical flares in the star identified as the optical counterpart of the recurrent transient X-ray source A 0538 are reported. The region of sky containing the source was examined on 85 plates taken with the UK Schmidt telescope between 1974 and 1979, including times of observed X-ray outbursts. Increases in the magnitude of the candidate star of approximately 1.8 were observed on three of the plates taken at 16-day intervals and were simultaneous with recorded X-ray outbursts. An optical luminosity of 3 x 10 to the 38th erg/sec is estimated for the flare state under the assumptions of a type B2.5 star at a distance corresponding to that of the LMC, which luminosity is approximately three times greater than the X-ray flux measured at the same time. A period of either 16.668 or 16.645 + or - 0.002 days is calculated from previous observations, and the centroid of the emission in the flare state is found to be within 1 arcsec of that in the quiescent state, confirming the identification of the optical with the X-ray source. The X-ray spectrum and optical properties of A 0538-66 suggest that it should be classed with systems having hard spectra and high mass counterparts.
