TAMA is a Japanese project to construct and operate an interferometric gravitational-wave detector with a baseline length of 300 m at the Mitaka campus of National Astronomical Observatory in Tokyo. The aim of this project is to develop techniques necessary for future large-scale interferometers and, moreover, to detect gravitational waves generated within our local group of galaxies. Now, stable operation of the TAMA300 interferometer has been realized under the final configuration, except for power recycling with a displacement noise level of 6×10-18 m/Hz. The interferometer was operated continuously over 7 hours without unlock. In this article, the design of the TAMA300 interferometer is reviewed, and its current status of development is reported. .
