The luminosity function near the turnoff point depends on the age and composition of stars in a cluster. It has a number of advantages over the H-R diagram for comparing stellar models with observations. The luminosity function is not affected by the uncertainties in mixing length parameter and complicated low-temperature opacities. It should be possible to obtain bolometric luminosities from multicolor observations without any reference to model atmospheres. A number of theoretical luminosity functions are presented to illustrate their dependence on age and chemical composition. It is proposed that not only H-R diagrams but also luminosity functions should be used to estimate ages of globular clusters and their uncertainty.
