Investigation of magnetic energy release in merging flows by numerical integration of unsteady MHD equations in two dimensions found no explosive energy release in two topologically different flow geometries in the absence of imposed strong plasma inflows. The geometries included the merging of straight field lines without magnetic reconnection, and the merging with reconnection at an x-type neutral point; in both geometries the merging energy release is less than the diffusive energy release. The results show that two-dimensional merging without strong forcing is an applicable mechanism for gradual plasma heating and magnetic field dissipation, but not for explosive magnetic energy release.
