The supersonic beam model of Chan and Henriksen (1980) is applied to demonstrate that the energy of the circumferential magnetic field in the northern radio jet in 3C 31 should amount to only 1% of the flow kinetic energy in order to result in the changes noted in the expansion rate by an incipient magnetic pinch. The expansion rate changes could also be caused by the characteristic length scales of outward decreasing confining pressures external to the beams; the pressure variations for external confinement can account for the observed collimation changes, as indicated by X-ray data on gaseous halos of massive elliptical galaxies.
