The effect of the gravitational field on the complex structure of the vacuum is investigated theoretically using the phenomenological approach of Grigorian and Sakhakian (1984) and attributing certain properties of an elastic medium to the vacuum. A tension tensor is defined which is not identical to the pseudotensor of the gravitational-field energy-momentum, and it is postulated that the vacuum participates with normal matter in the formation of the space-time metric in a way described by the solution of the field equations. The case of a central-symmetry static field is examined in the post-Newtonian approximation, and it is found that solutions exist which correspond to superdense celestial bodies with masses much greater than 1 solar mass (perhaps the prestellar bodies proposed by Ambartsumian, 1958). Static-degenerate vacuum configurations specific to each celestial object are shown to be in harmony with Einstein's theory of gravitation.
