A method is proposed for determining the orbital parameters of weak spectra buried beneath the noise of individual spectrograms. It is assumed that any temporal variation of the mean spectral intensity distributions has been restored, and that the broad distribution of spectral intensities has been smoothed to an approximately mean value. The observed spectrum is described as a continuously varying function of time. In order to evaluate the method, a numerical model is developed in which noisy data are simulated by a series of computer-generated pseudorandom numbers. It is found that if the form of the spectrum is known, a cross-correlation of the assumed spectral form and each of the observed spectra can be calculated, and their sum can be computed as a function of the observed orbital parameters. Several recommendations are offered for interpreting data treated by this method.
