Supernovae
Scientific paper
The predicted characteristics of individual line profiles and blends formed by resonance scattering in supernova envelopes are described. Synthetic spectra consisting of blended scattering profiles on an underlying continuum are compared with McDonald Observatory spectra of Type I and Type II supernova. The synthetic spectra account reasonably well for many of the features observed during the early phases of both types, although not for the Balmer lines in the Type II. Some rough constraints on the density profiles and chemical compositions of the observable layers of the envelopes are given.
