The importance of analyzing the apparent distribution of faint galaxies for solving the problem of the large-scale structure of the universe is pointed out. For the first time an analytic method is used to calculate fluctuations in the numbers of galaxies due to cellular structures. Application of the obtained formula to a deep sample of galaxies does not confirm the reality of the considered cell model. The results of the observations can be readily explained by small fluctuations in the interstellar extinction.
