The scattering of radiation from a uniformly distributed internal source or of normally incident parallel rays by a homogeneous plane layer with optical thickness tau(0), true absorption, and Rayleigh scattering is investigated analytically, applying the multiple-scattering approach of Sobolev (1949) and Loskutov and Sobolev (1979 and 1981) to evaluate the accuracy of degree-of-polarization estimates in astrophysical models based on either the simple single-scattering assumption (SSA) or the modified SSA (MSSA). Numerical results for tau(0) = 0.05-10.0, lambda = 0.5-1.0, and eta = 0 or 0.5 are presented in tables. It is found that neither SSA or MSSA gives accurate polarization results in the uniform-distribution case. In the illuminated layer, the cases of diffuse reflection and diffuse transmission are examined separately. For reflection the SSA is valid only at tau(0) less than 0.25, but improved accuracy is obtained with the MSSA (as used for Jupiter and Venus clouds by Sobolev, 1968, and Loskutov, 1971). For transmission, the same limits hold at lower degrees of accuracy, but neither SSA nor MSSA is satisfactory for tau(0) greater than 1.0.
